The region is the south of Sydney between the Cooks River and the Royal National Park. St George is the northern half: Hurstville, Kogarah, Rockdale, Bexley, Carlton, Penshurst, Mortdale, Oatley, Blakehurst, Sans Souci and the bayside suburbs on Botany Bay, split between Georges River and Bayside councils. Across the Georges River is the Sutherland Shire, one council: Sutherland, Jannali, Como, Menai, Illawong, Engadine and Heathcote on the western side, Miranda, Caringbah, Gymea, Kirrawee and Sylvania in the middle, and Cronulla, Woolooware, Burraneer, Lilli Pilli and the Port Hacking waterfront on the east, with Bundeena and Maianbar across the water in the national park. The Princes Highway and the rail line run down the spine, the M5 and Southern Cross Drive bring everything in from the north, and Taren Point Bridge and Captain Cook Bridge cross the Georges.
The houses, and what they need
St George is 50s and 60s brick veneer and interwar bungalows on decent blocks, and under Georges River and Bayside planning it’s become duplex and knock-down rebuild country, with apartment sites at Hurstville, Kogarah and Rockdale. The bayside strip from Kyeemagh to Sans Souci is older fibro and brick on sand. The Shire’s established suburbs, Miranda, Caringbah, Gymea, Sutherland and Engadine, are 60s and 70s brick on sandstone blocks that back onto bush, and knock-down rebuilds, pools and granny flats are the daily work. Cronulla, Burraneer, Lilli Pilli and the Port Hacking waterfront are the steep expensive blocks where a new house means a garage cut into rock and a pool craned in. Menai, Illawong, Bangor and Barden Ridge are 80s and 90s estates on the sandstone plateau above the Georges. The jobs: pools in rock, duplex cuts, knock-down rebuilds, garage basements, apartment basements at the centres, and bayside sand digs.
The ground under the Shire and St George
The Shire is Hawkesbury sandstone. It’s at the surface on the Port Hacking cliffs and the Georges River gorge, within a metre across Sutherland, Miranda, Caringbah, Gymea and Engadine, and on the plateau at Menai and Illawong, with thin dark soil, bush gullies and rock in every deep cut. The Kurnell peninsula and the Cronulla flats are sand dunes over rock. St George’s ridges, Hurstville, Bexley, Penshurst and Kogarah, carry a cap of Wianamatta shale and clay over the sandstone, so a shallow cut is clay and a basement is rock. The bayside flats from Kyeemagh through Brighton-Le-Sands and Ramsgate to Sans Souci are Botany Bay sand with the water table a metre down, and acid sulfate soil in the low ground. The Cooks River and Wolli Creek flats at Arncliffe, Wolli Creek and Banksia carry old fill and flood. The Georges River foreshore at Lugarno, Oatley and Como is steep sandstone straight to the water.
The councils, the bush, and getting to you
Sutherland Shire, Georges River and Bayside are the councils. The Shire is strict on bushfire, with ratings and asset protection zones across the gully blocks and the national park edge, and firm on trees and foreshore. Rock excavation near neighbours comes with vibration limits and dilapidation reports across the Shire. Georges River and Bayside run heritage conservation areas on parts of Hurstville, Kogarah, Bexley and the older bayside streets, and flood planning levels along the Cooks River, Wolli Creek and the bay. Dewatering on the bayside sand is controlled. Acid sulfate maps cover the low ground near the bay and the rivers. Cut and fill on the steep waterfront blocks is regulated with the retaining. Everything beyond set limits goes through the DA or CDC, and we dig to the approved plans. Access is the M5 and the Princes Highway from the north, Taren Point or Captain Cook Bridge over the Georges, and the Kingsway through the middle of the Shire.
