Most earthworks in Sydney start the same way: the plans are checked against the site, the levels are set out with pegs and string lines, and Dial Before You Dig comes back before anything moves. If there's any doubt about where a service runs, it's hand-exposed first. That half day of setting out is what keeps the rest of the job on program.

The cut itself is done in passes, not one deep scoop. Topsoil comes off first and is either stockpiled for reuse or loaded straight out, because it's no good as fill. Then the machine works down to the design level, checking against the profiles as it goes. On a house pad that usually means cutting the high side and filling the low side so the pad ends up level without carting more material than needed. Where the cut hits sandstone, the operator changes to a ripper or breaker rather than forcing the bucket, which is slower but doesn't wreck the machine or the edge of the cut.

Fill is the part that gets skipped on cheap jobs. Loose fill settles, and a slab poured on it cracks. So fill goes in layers, each one compacted before the next, and where the engineer has specified it, it's tested. On reactive clay sites in the west and the Hills, that compaction matters even more because the ground moves with moisture.

Spoil is loaded out as the dig goes, not stockpiled where it blocks the site. If it can be reused on site as fill, it is. If not, it's carted and the tipping is spelled out in the quote so there's no surprise at the end.

The last pass is the trim: the pad or cut brought to final level, edges cleaned up, the site tidy and ready for the concreter, the plumber or the retaining wall crew. The next trade should be able to walk on and start without a call back to us.
